Take this opportunity to stay with ordinary Nicaraguan families in a small town and again on a coffee farming cooperative; learn from local speakers on Nicaraguan-U.S. political history and current economic conditions.  Reflect on all this while being active – hiking, swimming and Latin dancing.

This will be our approximate itinerary, based on the previous groups from 2011 and 2012. 

DAY 1: Evening arrival to the International airport in Nicaragua.
A brief welcome, health and safety guidelines and review of tomorrow´s schedule by the
Matagalpa Tours guide.Overnight stay in Managua.

DAY 2:  Managua, Children’s Programs in the Los Quinchos dump, Fairtrade factories, and Clean Water NGO

7: 00 AM:  Breakfast at the hostal Los Pipitos

8:00 AM:  A brief welcome, health and safety guidelines and review of tomorrow´s schedule by the Matagalpa Tours guide.

09:00 AM:  Meet the coordinator of “Los Quinchos” a project that gives hospitality to abandoned and mistreated children. Their goal is to reinsert children in their own society offering them access to human rights they have been denied up to now.

10: 00 AM:  Visit one of the projects that “Los Quinchos”runs at “La Chureca” the largest garbage dump in Nicaragua. The group will have time to meet some of the children in the program and play some games.

12:00 PM:  Lunch in Managua

01: 30 PM: Visit the Women’s Sewing Cooperative of Fair Trade Garment

Factory Nueva Vida (COMAMNUVI), this cooperative is the first workers-owned free tarde zone in the world, sewing organic and fair trade cotton clothing for the world, sewing organic and fair trade cotton clothing for export to the U.S. And Europe.

03:00 PM:  Visit to Potters for Peace, an Non Governmental Organization, member of the International Organization to promote safe Water, as one of the World Health Organization programs.

5:00 PM  Before the group will be divided to meet the families, a meeting will be held to share impressions about this day, reflection time

7:30 PM  Meet your host family at the Batahola Cultural Center

DAY 3: Political and Economical Situation in Nicaragua

7: 00 AM:  Breakfast at the homestay

8:00 AM:  Free time to spend with your host family

10: 00 AM:  City tour Managua, cathedral, downtown, earthquake area

11: 00 AM:  Visit to the historical Sandino Museum

12: 30 PM:  Lunch in Managua

4: 00 PM:  Dance Class Bailes Latinos (1 hour)

5: 00 PM:  Visit the Batahola Cultural center, an organization that runs different social projects to promote education programs among young people, children and women. They aim to promote and integral education focus on human rights.

DAY 4: History, human rights and the situation of woman in Nicaragua

6: 00 AM:  Breakfast at the homestay

7:30 AM:  Early departure to Matagalpa

10: 00 AM:  The first meeting of the day will take place at the Matagalpa tours office where you will meet Carlos Ruiz, a very passionate historian Matagalpino who will share some important details about the History of Nicaragua from a different point of view.

12:30 PM:  Lunch in Matagalpa

2: 00 PM:  The group will continue listening to Carlos Ruiz in the Matagalpa tours office, this time he will talk about the economical situation, wages, economy policy and perspective on free trades agreements and the Alba agreements with Venezuela. Introduction to shopping exercise.

4: 00 PM:  Shopping exercise at the local market to understand the purchasing power related to the incomes of the Nicaraguans.

5: 00 PM:  Reflection time

6: 00 PM:  Afterwards the group will be divided into the different home stays where diner will be waiting.

7: 00 PM:  Dinner and overnight stay at the homestays in Matagalpa

DAY 5: Fair trade Farms and Collectives

7: 00 AM:  Breakfast at the homestay

8: 30 AM:  Visit El Colectivo de Mujeres de Matagalpa “The women’s colective”. They work hard on defending human rights, especially women and children’s right. You will get to know more about their job during a visit to this organization. These women are not only activists in pro human rights but also are defenders of gay and lesbian rights and people with HIV.

10: 30 AM:  For a better comprehension of the coffee market in Nicaragua, fair trade and rural cooperatives, you will have a lecture of these and other issues at CECOCAFEN (the Coffee Cooperatives Central Association in the Northern Regions, an organization that promotes and sells quality coffee and is a pioneer in the commercialization of Fair trade coffee.

12: 30 PM:  Lunch in Matagalpa

2: 00 PM:  Departure to the community La Corona

3: 00 PM:  Arrival to the community. Welcome meeting and introduction to the community by Don Alfredo’s family and the other host families.

4: 00 PM:  Distribution of the participants in the farmer houses.

6: 00 PM: Dinner at the homestay

DAY 6: A rural Eco-tourism experience

7: 00 AM:  Breakfast at the homestay

8: 00 AM:  Visit to the cooperative of organic coffee (know about the Coffee process, Ecotourism project and their cooperative: “Cafe organico”

10: 00 AM:  Visit the waterfall La Corona

12: 00 M:  Lunch together with the group

1: 30 PM:  Make typical food “Nacatamales”

3: 30 PM:  Reflection time

4: 30 PM:  Participate in a cultural activity (children games, el encostalado, juego de chimbombas, popular Nicaragüense music and typical dances)

6: 00 PM:  Dinner in group (self made nacatamales)

DAY 7: Hiking, dry mill visit and traveling towards the colonial city León

7: 00 AM:  Breakfast at the homestay and departure La Corona to continue the trip

9: 00 AM:  Chocolate Factory / Hike Apante

12: 00 PM:  Lunch in Matagalpa

1: 30 PM:  Visit the “dry mill” Solcafé, where the drying and industrial part takes place, you can get a good impression on the coffee processing after it leaves the farm. At a cupping session at the lab, you will learn about how to judge a quality cup of coffee!

3: 30 PM:  Departure to Leon ( this is a 2 ½ hour drive)

DAY 8: Hiking up the youngest active volcano and enjoy the pacific beaches

6: 00 AM:  In the early morning we drive towards the foot of the little black and active volcano, Cerro Negro. It will take us just an hour to reach the top and to be able the great views in the surroundings and in the crater. But the adventure of going down will take us even much less time when sliding down the black sandy slopes of the volcano.

10: 30 AM:  Time to explore the history of the revolution at the many mural paintings and museums and o some shopping before heading to the beach Las Peñitas, half an hour driving from León.

12: 30 PM:  Lunch in Las Peñitas Leon

DAY 9: The peaceful Laguna de Apoyo

Day off at Posada Ecológica la Abuela to have some time to relax at the lagoon and evaluate the trip and the whole experience

DAY 11: Departure to the Airport in Managua

Today it is time say goodbye to Nicaragua. The van will transfer you to the international airport
for your flight back home.
